Travel to western-most part of Mongolia
I want to travel to the western-most part of Mongolia during 2010 in late August (although could go at the start of June).
From my calculations it is at Latitude 48°52'30.00"N Longitute 87°45'0.00"E. I think that Google is a bit out in this area.
What will the travel conditons be like west of Khurgan Nuur to the western most border? (I note the topic at Trek - Bayan-Olgii - Base camp to Khoton Nuur.)

Re: Travel to western-most part of Mongolia
Hi Ndirons
I have done the trek you mentioned in the website last summer around July. We didn't have any weather problems. Snow was abundant on the peaks but nothing on our path except a bit on the high pass before approaching the lakes. West of Khoton Nuur I haven't been and am not sure how conditions are. I am also not sure about how easy it is to travel there and get permission from the army.
Note that you must travel with a border pass once you get west of the eastern part of Khurgan Nuur which means that whole area.
Mosquitoes are a real pest once you get near the lakes so just be prepared with long sleeves, repellents and good humor.
I saw people doing this route with horses and camels so I believe it is passable with animals. The difficult part would be the high pass which is a rocky trail that gets as high as about 3200m.
Do you have any other specific questions? What kind of information did you gather and do you need?
Good travels!
Yoni

Re: Travel to western-most part of Mongolia
My trip is by Horse across Mongolia, tip to tip.
I note the info on the site re getting a border pass etc. I have added a yellow pin for the Western Most Mongolian Border.
I am interested in the travel conditions to the western most point on the border. How far could I get by horse? Would I need climbing gear? Would altitude be a problem for me? (I have no mountain experience.)

Re: Travel to western-most part of Mongolia
Sounds like a great and long adventure!
I believe late August is better in this area since early June could still be pretty cold.
The heights in the west aren't a real problem if you don't go mountain climbing. You won't get above 2700 meters so breathing won't be a difficulty and it won't be dangerous. The coordinates you mentioned seem accessible on 1:100k maps from Khoton Nuur. It looks like there is a trail leading west of Khoton Nuur. It gets as far as 5 km from the western most border and it looks like the terrain isn't difficult.
You can download the maps:

The border it seems, passes on the ridge top and if you really intend on touching the fence maybe you would need climbing equipment. I'm not sure if it is possible and would guess it could get you into trouble.
I'd be happy to hear more about this journey and be of any help I can
Good luck
